About DMB Consulting

DMB Consulting was founded by Dahlton Mehrten Brown, a lifelong resident of Sloughhouse, California. His family is proud to occupy an exceptionally special piece of land along the banks of the Cosumnes since the turn of the 20th century. Since birth, he has spent countless hours hunting, fishing, and exploring its levees, waters, and endless beauty. Dahlton’s one-of-a-kind personal relationship to the Cosumnes River, coupled with his education and professional background in supporting Tribal communities, provides a unique opportunity to help identify locations for enhancing cultural resource protection measures while mitigating active and future challenges regarding the inadvertent discovery of Indigenous cultural resources along the river and surrounding areas.

Dahlton is a firm believer in the saying “You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar”. His approach to cultural resource protection encourages early engagement, progressive mitigation efforts, and collaborative approaches to solving oppositional interests. While preferring to build positive relationships, he has also honed his skillset in navigating challenges that often arise when doing cultural preservation work.

About Dahlton Mehrten Brown

Dahlton Mehrten Brown was born in Sacramento, and spent much of his infancy along the shores of the Cosumnes River in Sloughhouse, California, on his family's multi-generation cattle ranch. Although much of Dahlton and his younger brother, Dahkota's, youth was spent in Amador County, they took any opportunity available throughout life to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Mehrten family ranch in Sloughhouse.

Driven by his dad's commitment to his Tribal community, Wilton Rancheria, Dahlton earned his Bachelor’s in Native American Studies with Interdisciplinary Honors in Education from Stanford University. Additionally, he is proud to have earned his Master’s degree from the Stanford University Graduate School of Education in Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies. His entire career has been dedicated to working alongside and within Tribal Nation administrations. Aside from a brief stint as a young professional working in college admissions, he has specialized in Tribal Governance and Administration, working with not only central California tribes but also with Tribal Nations across the United States. Much of his professional experience has been rooted in the Sacramento Valley as an Executive leader for Wilton Rancheria, located in Elk Grove.

During his career with Wilton Rancheria, Dahlton was critical in advancing once dysfunctional relationships between the Tribe and several local governments, agencies, and municipalities. As a result, the Tribe has continued to see overwhelming success in advancing its goal of preserving Tribal heritage while also leveraging local institutions to help educate about the unique, powerful, and ongoing history of the Cosumnes River and its residents, both historic and contemporary.

Dahlton's passion for the Cosumnes River, protecting cultural resources, and capturing the incredible legacy of the greater Sloughhouse area is a product of his wonderfully serendipitous life. He is exceptionally blessed to have such a connection to the land on which he lives and is proud to see that love carried on through his wife, Rebecca, and their young daughter, Romie.

To this day, Dahlton and his family seize every opportunity to explore the land, ranch, and wildlife in search of cool rocks, feathers, or anything else that brings them a smile.
